Fine.

That’s the answer I most often get to the question, “How are you doing?” It doesn’t matter if I’m at work, the grocery store or greeting people on Sunday morning. Not doubt about it - the answer is definitely fine.

But did you ever stop to wonder…is everyone really fine? Of course they’re not. “Fine” is the simple and quickest method of getting through the greeting. It doesn’t require involvement, it doesn’t require much time and most people find the answer totally sufficient.

But what if we go through our entire lives just exchanging “fines”? What a sad and boring life we would lead. Next week during our study of Ephesians, Paul changes the tone of his letter and starts talking about how we should live. First and foremost, we must grow up spiritually. And a key part of that, as we will learn, is going beyond the “fines” and speaking to each other in truth and love. This counter-cultural concept is not only key to our spiritual growth, but to living more interesting and fulfilling relational lives. But to understand it more clearly, you will just have to stay tuned until next week.

After all, we all know that there is so much more to life than just “fine”!

MARRIED LIFE LIVE
On Friday, May 2nd, PTCC will host its first annual Married Life Live. It will be a great date night for you and your spouse. There will be heavy appetizers and entertainment in our atrium, following by great music, drama and inspiring speakers in the worship center. It starts at 7 PM.

Cost is $20/couple and tickets go on sale this Sunday in the atrium. So get your babysitter now!

In addition, we will be celebrating our marriage by having galleries of those fun, but awful photos of couples. Be sure to bring one of you and your spouse and help us keep things “interesting”. Prizes will be awarded for the most “interesting” photo. Photos will be collected at the ticket table or via our website and can be returned.

Large quantities of floor tiles or wall tiles left over from remodeling projects would be wonderful.
If you can contribute, kindly give Suzy Borg a call at 972-839-3111 and she will arrange for pickup or drop off.

Excitement

As I type this email today, I can’t tell you how excited about what is coming up on women’s ministry. I can barely stand it. We have so many talented women that have been busy helping on some great initiatives - I just have to share them with you…

Retreat – We have just finalized the details of our retreat August 15 and 16th. The theme will be “What Not to Wear” and it will be held at the Westin Stonebriar in Frisco on August 15-16th. Ashley Skinta and Desiree McMillian have been busy planning away and will be pulling in all of you who have signed up to help. I will share more details on Tuesday.

PT Moms - We also have several women taking a look at PT Moms. PT Moms will be a group where busy moms can get together and support one another. Angela Bailey and Jennifer Hedrick are looking at what our program could look like next year, while Monique Browder and Kristi Stephens are working as event planners for a PT Moms event coming in October.
Christmas Brunch – I just spoke to Nancy Guthrie, our brunch speaker, this morning. She is a wonderful woman - I know you will all love her. Jennifer Bolin and Heather Bowers will be leading this effort in the very near future.

Goals and Curriculum for Women’s 2008-2009 – We have also finalized our goals for the upcoming year along with our upcoming curriculum. I am going to review this with our women’s leadership team (your small group leaders) on April 7th and then I will share more details on registration and schedule.
Married Life Live – We will be celebrating marriage church-wide on Friday, May 2nd. It’s going to be a great date night with music, drama, great speakers…and of course, the ever-needed childcare. This will be part of “marriage week” in Women’s Ministry, as we will be studying what Ephesians has to say on marriage. Kim Frame and Liz Jones will be assisting us by planning for this great night.

Ephesians – I can’t tell you how much great feedback I have gotten on Ephesians. Our teachers have done a tremendous job and I think all of us are really digging in and learning what Paul truly meant in his letter long ago. This week, Paul Basden one of our senior pastors, will teach through Ephesians Chapter 3 on how to pray for others. One of our greatest privilege as believers is to enter into God’s presence and pray, especially for others. Simple as it sounds, intercessory prayer is a profound experience of holding up to God the needs of others so He can release His power on their behalf.

Baby Hadley Hairston – Finally, I cannot go without saying how excited I am about the birth of Hadley Hairston. Laura, my awesome partner in women’s ministry, and Ryan are getting ready to welcome their new bundle of joy next arrive next Wednesday! I can’t wait to share the news with all of you. Keep them in their prayers as they get in their final few nights of sleep…

Wow…how far we have come and what an exciting road ahead. I’m so glad you are all on the journey with me. It’s going to be a great one!

BATHROOM BEAUTIFICATION TEAM
A note from the team....

The earth is the LORD'S, and the fullness thereof; the world, and they that dwell therein. – Psalm 24:1 (KJV)

Indeed, our Heavenly Father owns the earth, and yet he graciously grants us stewardship of its magnificient beauty and vast resources. But it doesn't end with the external world--he encourages us to create asthetically pleasing surroundings where we spend much of our time, the indoors.

The Bathroom Beautification Initiative focuses on taking a not so lovely, but necessary area, the bathroom, to a new level of asthetics. The Theme is Green, a charge to recycle and redesign, will offer a unique opportunity to use as many recycled items whenever possible to create six distinctive bathrooms: a Girls and a Boys, a Teen Girls and a Teen Boys and a Ladies and a Mens.

The new decor will evolve from an interesting blend of the current industrial architectural lines and a colorful, savvy recycled statement. Scripture tastefully and artfully juxtaposed will complete the look. A project of this size requires the synergy of many creative minds. With the Theme is Green Design Team now in place, it's time focus forward with a specific needs list.

Current needs might found in your garage or tucked away in the back of a closet: wood benches, small tables, picture frames, large mirrors, coat racks (wall mount), old cell phones, leather belts, art supplies. Large quantities of floor tiles or wall tiles left over from remodeling projects would be wonderful.

Also, a Paint Team consisting of volunteers to paint the bathrooms is key to creating that all important palette--the foundation for great design. Serving on the Paint Team in two hour increments would be a great contribution.

If you would like to serve in a unique ministry that offers fun, fellowship and flexibilty and/or have recycled items to donate, please contact Suzy Borg at 972-839-3111(cell phone). She will also schedule a time to meet you at the church to drop off donations.

Thank you in advance for your sacrifice to impact others in a most unlikely place--the Preston Trail bathroom.

We Are One

I can remember sitting all alone during recess, dejectedly watching a group of girls on the monkey bars. The girls laughed, whispered to one another and seemed to be having more fun than I had ever had in all of my eight years of life. They were not an ordinary group of girls. They “belonged” to the exclusive Guess jeans girls group (the ones with the little zippers by the ankle!).I was not invited to their party. I was wearing dark, stiff Lee jeans from K-mart. My mom and dad had decided it was foolish to spend forty dollars on blue jeans that I would soon outgrow and already looked as if they had been worn. Those girls broke my heart… over blue jeans! Seems silly now, but it would be one time out of many when I wouldn’t quite make the cut of belonging in a group. Unfortunately, there have also been times throughout my life when I have treated other people in the same negative fashion that I had been treated--sometimes knowingly, other times unaware. I am sure we can all recall a time when we have felt like an outsider.

As we study Ephesians chapter 2:11-22, Paul is teaching us that we can belong to something magnificent. The divided cultures of Jews and gentiles are a great example of how mankind needed the restoring work of Jesus. We are invited, through the work of Jesus Christ, to be a part of God’s family! Regardless of our color, education, culture, financial status, or perceived level of righteousness, we have been encouraged to put away all of the things that divide us and become a real family.

Eph 2:19-21 We are citizens along with all of God's holy people. We are members of God's family. We are his house, built on the foundation of the apostles and the prophets. And the cornerstone is Christ Jesus himself. We who believe are carefully joined together, becoming a holy temple for the Lord.
(New Living Translation)

Even if you do not feel like you fit in, you are invited to belong! We have the opportunity to be sisters in God’s family! Through Christ we have the opportunity to see our names written on His family tree for all time and eternity. How amazing! I look forward to learning alongside each of you!

Grace,

The MISSION Field

REMINDER: NO CLASS NEXT WEEK. IT'S SPRING BREAK.

The MISSION Field

Every semester we get the opportunity to participate in various local and global missions efforts. Some of us donate needed money, some of us plan and prepare and some of us actually go to the mission field.

Shannon White, one of our wonderful small group leaders, and her family are headed to Mexico next week. Here's what's ahead in her words....

I am extremely privileged for our family to be a part of the 29 serving at Casa Hogar Elim Orphanage over Spring Break. Jennifer Bolin and Courtney Dolch from Women’s Bible Study are also joining us in this incredible opportunity to serve God’s children. Am I a little nervous and apprehensive? Definitely! This is our first mission trip and working with little ones is not necessarily my SHAPE (I am more comfortable directing adults in what to do!). But I am resting in God’s promise that we discussed last week in our study “For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.” Eph 2:10 I know God has already given me “his incomparably great power” and the SHAPE to serve effectively in whatever needs to be done.

This trip is also special because my sister, Kelly, will be meeting us down there. She has her Master’s degree in Art Therapy and will be directing the arts & crafts for a few days of the trip. She visited the orphanage this fall and said it was amazing to see the children express themselves through their art – many drew pictures of homes and families! On a side note, my sister is still seeking the truth of who Jesus really is….my prayer is that she can get a taste of His love and the incomparable riches of His grace as she interacts with our group.

We are extremely thankful for how the PTCC family has responded to the needs of the orphanage. Almost $2000 has been given to provide for the children of Casa Hogar Elim. Courtney Dolch also secured a donation of approximately 100 pairs of crocs from Learning Express. God is faithful! We have just been informed that their most pressing needs are dry goods for their depleted food pantry, paper & sanitary items and linens. We will be shopping for those things once we get there along with loving on the kids and doing several handyman projects.

We would be blessed by your prayers for the following….
· Safe travel on March 15th and 19th to Nuevo Laredo, Mexico and back.
· The children of Casa Hogar Elim orphanage to be encouraged by our presence.
· A greater awareness of how to assist in meeting the needs of Casa Hogar Elim both temporarily and long-term.
· All participants to be enriched and changed through serving “the least of these”.
· The group to show and tell Casa Hogar Elim and its neighbors about God’s compassionate love.

You can keep up with the trip next week at http://prestontrail.typepad.com/mexico/ where you will find participants’ blogs and pictures. Check it out and thank you again for your support and prayers!

Para los ninos,

Shannon White

What’s Your Favorite Meal?

Hello Women's Ministry!

Do you ever have those moments when someone states something so clearly that you could not have done it any better? Well, this is one of those moments. So therefore, I going to hand this email off to Paul Basden, our senior pastor and opening teacher on Ephesians....

“What’s Your Favorite Meal?”

Do you have a favorite meal? I do. It’s beef enchiladas, rice, black beans, chips and salsa and guacamole dip. And a Diet Coke.

What’s yours? Grilled salmon? Bone-in ribeye steak? Butterfly pork chops? Mom’s meatloaf?

Whatever your favorite meal is, there was a time when we all liked the same thing: milk. I don’t remember those days, but mother’s milk or baby formula is what we all drank as infants. Without it we would have died.

But at some point we had to grow up. So we graduated to strained peas, Cheerios (one at a time!), and eventually sandwiches and chips and fruits and salads and veggies and meats. Meat was the last step, because it’s way harder to swallow and digest than milk. But you won’t grow up if you never graduate from milk to meat.

What’s true of our bodies is also true of our spirits. We won’t grow up spiritually if we never graduate from milk to meat. The New Testament talks about “milk vs. meat” in several places, but the message is always the same. Leave the milk, eat some meat!

Our study of SHAPE has been rewarding – but it was milk. All you had to do was memorize a verse and show up once a week. You didn’t have to study your Bible or think for yourself. Nobody choked on the material or had a hard time digesting it. In fact, it was pre-digested for you. But now it’s time to graduate.

In this EPHESIANS study, you are going to eat spiritual meat. You’re going to have to get out your Bible several times a week … and open it to the passage we’re studying … and complete the personal Bible study in your booklet … and memorize the verse assigned … and ask questions of the passage and of God and of yourself. It’s not easy to eat spiritual meat – but it sure is nourishing! You will become stronger as you encounter God and listen to Him as He speaks through His Word.

So don’t take this Bible study lightly. Take it seriously. God does. He wants to meet you and relate to you personally as you read and study His Word. That is what you were created for – to know and love God!

One last thing: don’t be intimidated by thinking you have to be specially trained to understand Ephesians. You don’t. The study booklet assumes no seminary training and is written for guys who are in the marketplace every day (and girls who are parenting or in the marketplace too!). But if you will give yourself to serious study of this Bible book, you will find yourself following Christ more faithfully day by day.

For our first meeting on March 4th be sure to complete TWO personal Bible studies (chapters 1 and 2 in your booklet). Do one this week and one next week, and you’ll be ready to go. And ready to grow.

Longing for the meat that will make me strong,

Paul

P.S. The ear candling experiment was a hoot! I'm happy to report that we didn't burn the house down, injure any of our members and I think I may actually hear a bit better. For those of you who want to see more, take a look at the funny pictures below. I hope to hear many good stories from your groups as well. See you next Tuesday! - Carla

NEXT WEEK: Tuesday, March 4, 2008
HOMEWORK:
Read in your bible Ephesians 1. Complete Chapter 1 and Chapter 2 questions in your Ephesians workbook, pages 10-12 AND 14-15.

FOCUS GROUP: CALLING ALL MOMS OF LITTLE ONES!
Are you a mother with preschool children? As our women’s ministry expands, we want to look into the needs of this very influential segment. Join us for one of these brainstorming sessions:

Monday, March 10th 6:30 PM
Thursday, March 13th 10 AM

If you are interested in attending, please respond to this email or signup at next week’s women’s session.

BATHROOM BEAUTIFICATION TEAM
As we have gone through our SHAPE study, many of you have identified one of your primary areas of giftedness as “acts of service.” If you are looking for a practical way to put that spiritual gift to immediate use, here is an opportunity to serve that will allow you to have an impact on everyone who enters our doors, and help to ensure that they have an excellent encounter with Preston Trail. This opportunity is perfect for anyone with the gift of service regardless of your schedule because it allows you the flexibility to serve whenever your schedule will allow. Thom Morris, our Facilities Manager, is looking to create a cleaning team and a Bathroom Beautification Committee. We have all encountered dirty and poorly-stocked bathrooms before, and we want to ensure that no one ever has that experience here at PTCC. So if you have even an hour a week you could give to helping keep our bathrooms looking great, please respond to this email and Thom will contact you with more information.

Social Time, Action Time...

What a study is has been. I hope each of you found your own special SHAPE. As we all gear up to attend our socials this week, each of us will be finalizing our PTCC SHAPE gift inventory. Please be sure to complete yours and get it into your leader.

But then what? Yes, there is Ephesians....but just as important, now what.

That's right. Now What.

It's time for action, that's what. Time for you to try that new gift or area of service you identified. Time for the test drive! If you don't do it now, you won't do it. So take action this week.

And it's social time too. For those of you who are wondering what my group is doing, we are having dinner at my house, collecting SHAPE inventories and then doing ear candling. Basically, you stick a burning cylinder paper in your ear, lay on your side while talking to other small group members who doing the same, and the paper collects "unhealthy" ear wax from your ear. And you thought your small group was weird. Personally, I can't wait.

So whatever your group is doing, just have fun. Remember our goal is to grow closer to God...and closer to one another.

Until the results of the ear candling,

Carla

The Parable of the Talents

This week’s verse is one of my favorites. Not only is the story of the talents great, but I have applied this verse to many situations over the years. Here is a link to the full story, take a look: http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Matthew%2025;&version=31;

In the story a landowner gives each of his servants some money. One received five talents, another two talents and the third one talent – according to his abilities. Two of them double their money and the landowner is thrilled. One puts it in the ground and makes nothing. The moral of the story is that the servant should have invested the money…and we are to do the same.

God definitely gives us everything. Not only does he give us money, but he gives us gifts, too. All of us are starting to identify gifts, passions, and abilities. Once this study comes to a close, we have a decision to make. Will we be like the third servant and let those gifts sit in the ground and do nothing? Or will we take a risk and start using them?

Another key part of this story is the reward. The master replied to both men who invested wisely, ‘You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master’s happiness!’ . God will reward us for the investment we make, both with the opportunity to make more significant investments and with the opportunity to share in the return of those investments.

So if you are the person who is scared or unsure if you want a big commitment, never fear; start small. Try it out, God will direct you. If you are the person who wants more and believes you are ready for a big job, once again take a step forward and God will help you with the next step. Let’s trust Him to trust us.

Thankful for the small steps,

Carla

“Why does she know her gifts and I don’t?”

There are always two sides to everything. This week it’s been the Democrats vs. the Republicans (or actually the Democrats vs. the Democrats and the Republicans vs. Republicans). Tuesday in women's bible study it was the women who have found their gifts vs. the women who have not.

I can sense that for some of you, the lack of clarity about your life’s vision is making you feel a bit bummed. You were thinking that this study was supposed to whack you over the head and tell you that you are the most gifted children’s teacher on earth or that your life's calling is to serve the poor in Latin America. And it hasn’t. So now you are thinking "why don't I have a gift like so-and-so." Maybe you are thinking that you don’t have any gifts at all. I know - I have been there.

Well, fortunately, the Bible tells us in 1 Peter 4:10 that every single one of us has a gift. And just like Gwen so wonderfully pointed out last week, we all have seasons we go through where gifts are discovered, packed and unpacked and there are even seasons of waiting, where we are slowly developing a gift.

In addition to that, sometimes we don’t even realize we have a gift. We tend to think just because we have never done something before, it’s a sign we don’t have the gifts to do it. I know I felt this way when it came to teaching a few years back. But God put opportunity after opportunity in front of me and I s-l-o-w-l-y developed it. And that is probably happening to many of you as well. 1 Corinthians 12 (The Message) summarizes spiritual gifts well:

God’s various gifts are handed out everywhere; but they all originate in God's Spirit. God's various ministries are carried out everywhere; but they all originate in God's Spirit. God's various expressions of power are in action everywhere; but God himself is behind it all. Each person is given something to do that shows who God is: Everyone gets in on it, everyone benefits. All kinds of things are handed out by the Spirit, and to all kinds of people! The variety is wonderful:
wise counsel
clear understanding
simple trust
healing the sick
miraculous acts
proclamation
distinguishing between spirits
tongues
interpretation of tongues.
All these gifts have a common origin, but are handed out one by one by the one Spirit of God. He decides who gets what, and when.

In order to help you, we are going to add a few quizzes to your homework to help you discover your own gifts . Next week we will hand out a personality test that will help give you more clarity about who you are. The following week, we will circle back and have you take a spiritual gift quiz. I know there will be many surprises for all of you!

So hang in there! Keep at it! God has given ALL of us gifts. Some are just easier to find than others.

Anxious to add to your discoveries,
Carla

From the deadly drug "cheese" to teenage pregnancy, an epidemic is at handand every teen will arrive at the same crossroad in life: "Do I pursue risks, or play it safe?" As a grassroots effort to change teen culture, theDallas-based organization, Just Say YES created "Look Before You Leap," a
three-screen multimedia assembly show that takes relationship education to new heights.

The show uses a sky-diving theme to portray consequences of risk behaviors. With an adrenaline rush of drama, emotion, and comedy, the show exposes the world of teen sexual activity, substance abuse, and peer influence. The goal is to guide young people to say "yes" to their future by avoiding unhealthy choices.

LIDIA BOICU’S BACK HOME
Lidia received a good report from her doctor on Wednesday. She has two lymphnodes that still have cancer, but this is common and that fact she has only two is great news. Lidia will undergo two more chemo treatments and then start radiation. In addition, Dino is returning home on Friday and is recovering well from his accident. Thanks so much for all your prayers! Let’s give them time to be a family this week and keep our prayers and our visits to a minimum. Sometimes rest and family time is the best healing. SPIRITUAL GIFTS…ALIVE AND WELL AT PTCC

This past Sunday, I decided that I would look around and see exactly how people at PTCC were using and managing their spiritual gifts. It was quite a sight! Drew Allen, my partner in crime, agreed to help me in the effort. She has the gift of photography - and yes, she takes family pictures and is willing to shoot yours - just email her at drewanne@cebridge.net. She captured some of our PTCC people at their finest…

GIFT OF ENCOURAGEMENT
Here are two of my favorite people, Dr. Blake Bolin and his wonderful wife Jennifer (one of our women’s small group leaders). Each Sunday at 9:30 you can find them in the youth area, hanging out with middle school kids encouraging them. They help setup, count attendance and just hang out with the kids. They also lead middle school small groups during the week, making a lasting input on the kids. They make it look so super-hip…and I hope they are still there when my kids get to youth!

GIFT OF HELPING AND MUSIC
Most people who serve do so one hour and attend service the other hour. So what happens to their kids? No, they don’t attend PT Kids again, they get to go to PT Kids Club. PT Kids Club is a place where they get to hang out, sing and jump rope with Heather Tomlin, one of our great women’s small group leaders and the leader for the Club area. This week they got some additional help from Alainna Palmer’s (women’s small group leader & tech support) husband, Peter. And as you can tell by the looks of this picture, the kids in PT Club just loved it…and something tells me Peter is enjoying himself a bit too! Nice guitar!

GIFT OF HELPING, HOSPITALITY AND ….ADMINISTRATION
My hats are off to the Parking Team….in the past this has been the tough job of braving the elements, parking cars, greeting guests and getting everyone in and out of the facility safely. But over the last two months, the team, especially its leader Ken Self in the picture, has taken on the additional responsibilities of counting cars and fitting everyone into our very crowded lots. If you could only see the spreadsheet he now puts together with the Sunday parking stats!

GIFT OF TONGUES
I have yet to meet someone with the gift of tongues. And please let me know if you have it as I’d love to see it in action. However, I have discovered the closest version of it here at PTCC. Meet Wren Jacobs (left, son of our Worship Director Warren and wonderful women’s leader Sonya) and my son, Ethan Moss on the right. If there are any two kids who can talk a lot it is them. Whether its world affairs, why peanut butter and jelly is best with the crust cut off and their future t-ball team, they will talk about it. I have decided that if they don’t run for the presidency some day (definitely on the same ticket), they could maybe go into sales…or become teachers….or perhaps work with kids who talk even more than they do!

What a Sunday! I was so very impressed! And I didn’t even get to share the majority of the exciting roles out there, including non-Sunday ones. You know when many of us hear the word “Serving Team”, we often think it’s just a place to volunteer and give back. But from the looks of what I saw Sunday, I’d think we should rename them “Fun Teams”. I think these volunteers are having a fantastic time…maybe almost as much fun as the people they serve. Thank God for giving us gifts…and thank God for everyone who is on a serving team at PTCC.

So what is your gift? How are you going to manage it? I hope you can find a way to use it at PTCC. And if you can’t think of the right place, just ask your small group next week. Or heck, even email me…I’ve got tons of ideas!

Until the next excursion,

Carla
Director of Planning and Women’s Ministries
